Abstract
This study examines readiness for, and perceived risks associated with, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) adoption in Islamic digital banking institutions in Indonesia and Malaysia. Grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model and Perceived Risk Theory, the study employs a quantitative cross-sectional design with 287 banking professionals and digital banking customers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The findings show that generative AI readiness exerts a significant positive influence on adoption intention (β = 0.423, p < 0.001), while Shariah compliance risk (β = -0.281), data privacy risk (β = -0.196), and operational risk (β = -0.163) each impose significant negative effects. Multi-group analysis indicates that Shariah compliance risk weighs more heavily on adoption intention in Indonesia than in Malaysia, a pattern potentially associated with differences in Shariah governance infrastructure and regulatory context between the two jurisdictions. The study contributes empirical evidence on GenAI adoption within the institutional constraints distinctive to Islamic finance and offers practical implications for regulators, Shariah boards, and banking practitioners navigating AI-driven digital transformation.
